A Bad Beginning

Sir—Your editorial in this mornings "Dominion” is timely and to the point. The situation disclosed by the voting aud the Prime Minister’s reaction to it is not Avithout its humorous aspect. Quite a lot of the votes cast against Labour candidates were cast by disgruntled Labour supporters on the left wing. “And those behind cried ‘forward,’ and those before cried ‘back.’ ” The Prime Minister and Mr. Nash have been crying “back” ever since they made their rash promises eight years ago. Mr. Fraser's effusion in the “Standard”: is, of course, made to the "allery. Let us give Labour credit for what they have done; they have brought comfort instead of fear to murderers; they have taxed and borrowed more than any preA'ious Government in the whole years of our history; by their 40-hour week and high sales tax they have doubled the price of a house for those who need one. They have, by their compulsory unionism, made it necessary for National Party and Independent unionists to contribute to Labour Party funas. They have had the word “Democracy’ m their mouths continuously, but their skeleton in the cunboard, Socialism, was kept under lock aud key during the election. Mr. Fraser knovvs that New Zealand will not stand for Socialism. —I am, etc., A WORKER. ■Wellington, September 60.
