Avon the Hastings Stakes ou Saturday from a Held of 19 two-year-olds. This was one of the feature events at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club s spring meeting, and Silvio Avon coiniortably after an interesting struggle witii Blue Bonny, who is also owned ju M ellington, but trained at Pukekohe.. The day opened Hue, but during the afternoon there were several squally showers, and for the concluding races the track slowed up considerably. t It was a -bad day for ibackers, eight consecutive favourites 'being -beaten. Dividends for five of the winners were adduble figures, ranging up to a third or a Ce TraU*iug honours went to W. D. Young, who saddled up three winners, and b. 11. Morris was the most successful jockey, riding the last three winners, one of Avlncii. Koi iKagi. he trains himself. It was, however, an unlucky day for Mofris, tor he lost one of his charges, Shah Jehan. who broke a leg during the running of the Flaxmere (Handicap and was destroyed. At a judicial inquiry it was found that the accident was caused by several horses crowding in from the outside' alter the start, but there was uot sufficient. evidence to warrant action being taken against any particular rider. There was an excellent attendance and the totalizator handled £29,3&>/10/-, compared with £21,6-57 last year, an increase ° f Sandy Cape,’ a Wellington-owned maiden, scored a convincing win in the hurdles at long odds in which the owner, Mr P Louis participated substantially. He took over the lead at the half-mile, .was well clear Of Lueullus Boy, Circular Monmouth and Flying Spy turning for home, and won by a big margin. Malacca, who moved up in the later stages of tile race, beat the others, with Lueullus Boy a length back third and the favourite, Monmouth, fourth after giving a very mixed display. St. Bill lost his rider at the last fence. Sir Wiina, whose form lately has been consistent, was allowed -to pay false odds, the longest of the day. in the Flaxmere •Handicap, in which he overhauled the, favourite, .Skyhawk, in the last stride. Theatre led to the straight from bkybawk, ißarossa,. Citizen, Darag, Mr. Valiant and Sir Wina. -Skyhawk reached the front half-way down the running, and appeared to have" the race Avon when -Sir Wina camo fast on the outside and won by half a ■head. Walk Off was another to finish on from the back for a very close third and Theatre was fourth, with Barossa, Citizen, La Serena and .Mr. Valiant mext. SKyihawk drew 19, so his effort was a good one for a fresh horse. Kahuranaki. who drew 17, was never prominent. . There was another good finish for die Imperial Plate for maidens, with an outsider again prevailing. This was Interrogation, a Lord Quex four-year-old owned and trained by Mr. A. W. Meikle, Mangatcretere who' raced Charade with much success. Smart Boy soon singled himself out from the 'big field and led to the straight from Royal Greek, Haughty Queen, Man’s Pride, Note Raid, Interrogation and Gay Falcon. Haughty Queen took charge In the last furlong, but Interrogation ran her down to win by half a length.. Note Raid, who did not receive a clear run, finished resolutely for third, and -Man’s Pride, the favourite, was a good fourth. A check at the start cost him a winning chance. -Smart Boy, Gay Falcon and Royal .Greek did best of the others. Glenfalloch, a fresh horse, won the Spring Handicap with a solid finishing run from the favourite, Aqueduct, who was asked to cover far too much ground tnthe first half Of the race till he got to the front. He led into line troni Lotto, Flying Hawk, Glenfalloch, Crucible, re Kawiti, and Indian Sport, and looked assured of success when Glenfalloch caught him in the last stride. Crucible ran honestly for third money, two lengths behind the first pair, and Flying Hawk was fourth, with Te Kawiti beating the others. Indian Sport was never in a winning position, and did not finish well enough. The race for the Hastings Stakes was practically confined to the place-getters. Leighon’s Glory was the first to lump out. but Blue Bonny soon- headed her and set a solid pace to the straight from Silvio, Silvestre, Leighon’s Glory, Sunny Bosa, and Seropuri. The real struggle in the last furlong was between Silvio and Blue Bonny, and about 30 yards from the post Silvio, finishing resolutely, got the upper hand and drew out to score an attractive win by a length. Silvestre was a comfortable third from Leighon’s Glory, who finished on again after running about a good deal. She just beat Sunny Rosa, who finished well, and Delinquent and Seropuri were next. Several of the runners lost their chance at the start through inexperience. Martial Note, the favourite, was impeded at the start and was never afterward sighted. . . , „ There was a close finish for the Back Cup in which Morris rode with fine skill to win on Epping, on whom be. had made nearly all the pace. Greek Effort, Cheap Lodging, Silver Coin and Tidpover fob lowed Epping Iqto line, and in the last furlong Silver Coin on the rails and Tideover on the outside -both lodged hot challenges at Epping. In. a thrilling struggle Epping was momentarily headed, but came again in .the last two. strides, to win a very narrow decision from Tideover, ■with Silver Coin ouly a nose away third. Greenfeast was a good fourth. Sovereign Lad. the favourite, was never travelling like a possible winner. Solver’s saddle slipped early in the race and the same misfortune -befel Cheap Lodging’s rider later in the contest. Koi Ragi quickly got to the front In the Flying Handicap, and he led throughout, holding off late runs by Indian Sign and Palora to win by a good neck from- Indian Sign, with Palora half a head away third. Palora appeared unlucky as she hail to come wide and .make up ground, but she probably needed the race. Lenardo, also looking fresh, came home well for fourth, and Antollte and Fiddler’s Green were next. Ivar, Master Dasti, and ■Happy Ending werp never near the lead* (jrs. Kinneff jumped out well and- was second for two furlongs, but then drifted back.
