NEW AIR FIGHTER
Claims For Japanese Super-Zero (Received October 1, 11 p.m.) .WASHINGTON ( September 30.
The Japanese have a fighter more formidable than the Zero, said Senator Brewster. The new super-Zero was apparently just getting into production because only a few had yet been sighted but these few had proved tough and the ratio of American victories over losses which had been as high as four to one had begun to drop. The new plane was first encountered over Canton when five of seven American bombers were shot down. The latest model resembles the old Zero, but is faster and better protected and has more firepower. Senator Brewster added that the Japanese also have a new twin-engined bomber. The War Department said that detailed information of the new planes was still officially classified as secret. The daily communiques showed no appreciable change in the ratio of American and Japanese losses.
