SURVEYOR-GENERAL

Retirement Of Mr. Walshe

Retiring after 43 years of public service. the Surveyor-General, Mr. H. E. Walshe, was met on Thursday by a number of departmental officers, who paid tribute to his work during his 15 years in office. . A suitable presentation was made to him.

Air. Walshe entered the department as a draughting cadet at Gisborne in .1900 and held a variety of appointments in different districts. During his term of office as Surveyor-General he was prominent in town-planning and interdepartmental activities. He also supervised the setting up of special geodetic survey and topographical mapping branches. An outstanding feature of his career was his personal supervision of the reorganization and reconstruction of survey and title records of the Napier office which were destroyed by fire following the 1981 earthquake. He is also an outstanding mathematician.
