ENGINEER RETIRES

Service With Public Works Department After nearly 41 years’ service with the Public Works Department, Mr. H. H. Sharp, inspecting engineer, recently retired on superannuation. He entered the department as an engineering cadet in October, 1902, and in 1906 was promoted. to assistant engineer and took charge of the construction of the ~outn Island main trunk railway at Seddon. In 1998 he was given control of all the.department’s activities in Mar.borough a month before attaifiing the age of ~o venrs. In 1912 Mr. Sharp was transferred to Westport, and late in 1910 was promoted to resident engineer at Greymouth in control of the whole of the West Coast of the South Island In 1915 he was transferred to Stratford, and early in 1918 the Wangauu, district (which then was a separate area), was also placed under his control. In 1919 he was promoted to district engineer of the combined districts of Stratford and "Wanganui. Later, in 1919, he became district engineer at WelHlig'on. and in 1920 lie was promoted to staff engineer, head office, and an inspecting engineer in 1924. In 1932, during the depression. he assumed charge temporarily of the Wellington district, and carried out a large number of relief-of-iniemploy-ment works. He resumed his position of "inspecting engineer in 1936. and retained that position on the head office staff till his retirement. . . Mr Sharp is an Associate Member of, the Institutions of both Civil and Mechanical Engineers, and is a member ,ot the New Zealand Institution of Engineers. Of the latter body Mr. Sharr, is a foundation member and for the last 10 years has served ns a member of the council. In addition, he is an authorized surveyor, and> for the past seven years has served as acting member of the Main Hi"hwnys Board. For some considerable time Mr. Sham was very closely associated with the Marine Department on rltf construction and maintenance of lighthouses. and the control of harbour works all over New Zealand under the general direction of the marine engineer.
