German Rearguards Outside Naples
EIGHTH ARMY GAINS FIFTEEN MILES
LONDON, September 30.
A correspondent at the Allied headquarters reports that the Germans are still resisting on the road to Naples, but it is a rearguard action, and we may reach the city at any time. . A communique today reports advances ranging from.a few milts on the west coast to 15 miles in the east. A road junction has been captured on the eastern side of the Naples plain, and! on the plain itself the troops have advanced in the face of heavy demolitions.
The Eighth Army has captured Manfredonia, 25 miles north-east of Foggia.
With better weather the Allied air forces were active yesterday and cut German communications with Rome at a number of places. There was heavy flak but no enemy planes interfered.
