Hospital Board Assistance
For the first live months of the financial year 1913-44 the YY’elliugton Hospital Board spent £2588 on assistance to needy cases affected by sickness, separation, old "■■■e "widowhood, imprisonment and other causes. This is £172 short of the estimate. but. was an actual increase ot ±o.n on Hie same period of 1942. '.the assistance is given sulistiintinlly in rations and firing, with a small aggregate in- cash The rations and coal only cost ±a46 last month. The board helped 2-1” cases between July ”( and August 31 Jiiid received in August three letters of thanks for assistance, given in time- of need. For August. 1943, the total of grants in rations and living was greater than for August, .19-12, but in the aggregate slightly less than for 1941. Comparative figures for August. 1.143, with tlie 1942 figures in parentheses, ns presented to hist night's meeting of tlie hospital board, were: Milk rations, 9(17 (667); meat. 351 (255); groceries. 16.>7 (1126) ; coal. 85 (76) ; cash grants, £2b (£3O) : assistance to single men, £27 (£29) ; average weekly cases of single men, 9 (14). ThO approximate cost of rations only to the contiguous districts for the mouth was: YVellington City, £335; Eastbourne, £l9; Lower Hutt, £96; I’etone, £3ll Johnsonville, £5: Makara County, £8; Upper Hutt, £32; Hutt County, £2O. Total, £546. The total number of eases remaining at August 31 was 181. ntTeeting 734 persons. and the largest single cutises were sickness (89 cases. 342 persons), widowhood (33 and 133), and miscellaneous • (24 and 156). Between July 27, when there were 174 cases standing, and August 31, 243 eases were assisted.
