Previous Cases Recalled It was stated yesterday that the defeat of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Barnard, at Saturday's poll, had only one previous parallel, that of Sir Frederic Lang. It has since been ascertained that another Speaker, Sir George Maurice O’Rorke, was defeated at tlia iplls. Sir George, who was regarded as a Speaker of outstanding ability and held the Speakership for two terms, was twice defeated at the polls, the firs; time in 1890. and then, after he had’recaptured his seat in 1894, af the election in 1902. Like,Sir Frederic Bang. Sir Maurice also represented the old Manukau electorate for many years.
