Trainer Retiring. . . The Hawera trainer H. Scally has decided to retire. Polario has been leased, and the only other horse In the stable, Disturbed, hae been taken out of training. Won After Check. Rakanul’s success in his division of the Cornwall Handicap was better than it appeared, for he suffered a bad check at a critical stage of the race. This occurred at the half-mile, when he was on the fence, and he had to be taken to the outer and come round the field. He then went on to win easily, an outstanding performance under 10.3.
Equalled the Record. „ Town Survey’s 4.41 for the Great Northern Hurdles equalled the race record estab, lished by Prince of Orange in 1936. On that occasion Clarion Call was half a furlong in front when he made an error at the final fence and dropped his rider. Prince of Orange beat the others home, and though he was no champion he established a new record, for the going that day was dry, more like a summer track, and the fastest experienced at Ellerslie in June for many years.
English Derby Next Week. The 163rd renewal of the Derby stakes will be run in England on Saturday week, June 19. The meeting will be held at Newmarket, where the bulk of the Important races ar© concentrated during the war period. Formerly at Trentham. Sir Reynard, one of the long-priced winnerg'at Ellerslie on Monday, Is raced by Mrs. B. C. Bryant (formerly Mrs. George Mitehqll, Wellington),, and early in his career was trained at Trentham by H. B. Lorigan. Sir Reynard was bought at the toot of his dam, Stage Fright, at a winter sale at Trentham by the late Colonel George Mitchell, and in his three seasons had been placed on four occasions only prior to Monday's success, which was his first to date. Being a Hunting Song, the conditions at Ellerslie suited him. Made Good Early. , Hasten was having his third start °}“y as a jumper when he won the Hunt club Hurdles at Ellerslie, and confirmed the opinion that he would not take long to make his mark in this branch of racing. Hasten is a solidly-built horse who, could sprint and also manage middle distances, and was always regarded as an approved typo to put to hurdle racing. He is raced by the Masterton breeder. Mr. J. Mulvaney, and is trained by G> W. B. Greem. at Hastings. Showed Promise. rr.,„s When L. G.
