MAORI FARMERS
Ahuwhenua Trophy Award
The Ahuwhenua Trust Board has this year awarded Mr. Tihema Kingi, of Horohoro, Rotorua, first place _ in the annual competition among Maori farmers for the Ahuwhenua Trophy. This trophy, a magnificent, silver cup, was donated in 1933 by Viscount Bledisloe, then Governor-General of New Zealand, to commemorate his visit to lands in the course of development by Maori settlers under various Native land development schemes. The .competition, which is held annually, is an incentive in fostering a spirit of emulation and friendly rivalry in farming among the Maori people, and the dedicatory inscription on the cup, freely translated, reads appropriately thus: ‘‘The triumph of the warrior may fade, but he who conquers the soil gains; a lasting victory.” _ _ The judge of this year’s competition, Mr. K. M. Montgomery, Fields Instructor, Te Kuiti, commented on the fine effort of the winner, who had undoubtedly reaped the benefit of previous attempts ’in the competition.
