NEW VENTURA

LONDON, June 6.

The United States Navy Department announces that the first U-boat has been killed by a new type of Ventura bomber designed for naval patrol work. The Ventura, which was accompanying an Atlantic convoy last April, flew several miles to attack (he submarine, which crash dived after firing its deck guns and riddling the wing of the plane. The Ventura then released four depthcharges. and the U-boat was brought to the surface and sunk shortly afterward. U-boat commanders are believed to be growing desperate ns the result of the success of Allied planes, says the “Daily Mail's” aeronautical writer. The Üboats, after their recent losses, seem to have changed their tactics and when surprised by planes they no longer dive immediately, but more frequently try to fight it out on the surface. Crews of U-boats have revealed such improved gunnery that a number of fly-ing-boat captains are convinced that the Germans are specially . training antiaircraft gunners for service aboard sub-marines—-the changed policy being the result of the increasing, losses.
