An outstanding feat of horsemanship by IV. .1. Broughton—one ot the best of ms whole career—landed Alchemy a narrow and somewhat fortunate winner ot the hack distance event. Out in front early. Alchemy then allowed Condole to lead him to tiie straight. Here, just as tavern Light and Gynerio had ranged up on outer of the leader, Condole edged away a little from this fence. Il was a bare chance, but Broughton was game enough Cor it. and riding vigorously he siiiieezeu through to snatch the prize from Tavern Light and Condole in an exciting linisli. An outstanding surprise eveiitualed in the last race. Ngamatea, at win. odds oi nearly a century and a half, scoring Irom Spirit and Singapore.
