AUCKLAND, January 31. The Takanini trainer F. Smith, and his new stable jockey, K. V. Dye., occupied t limelight at the Auckland Lacing L übo midsummer meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday, winning the 'l'akapuua Cup with Lord Chancellor, the Devonport Handicap fl! * Kentish, and the Wynyard 1 late with Royal Merit, and being second with lot-k--ish in the Calliope Handicap. Smith s stable is very strong in three-year-olds this season, and his winners were all m that age. The victory o£ Lord Chancellor in the Takapuna Cup was u Hue effort. After lying second for Just over a nine, Lord Chancellor ran to the pacemaker, Gay Rosette, and they came into the straight almost together in front, with F oxlore, Beau Leon, Regal Fox, .lusllna and Landveyor handy. With a. furlong to go Gay Rosette began to weaken, and Lord Chancellor was immediately challenged by 1' oxlore, while Beau Leon and Justina made efforts. .Momentarily it appeared as 11 Lord Chancellor might be beaten, but he finished with the determination of a real y good horse and won by a long head trout the little-fancied Foxlore, who ran ills best race to date. Foxlore was twelfth favour ite In the field of 13 and paid double figures for a place. Beau Leon ran o solidly to be half a length away d Gay ftosettc was fourth, ahead ot J ilbtina, Te Kawiti. Sea-law and Foxsen. Ihe uisapnointment of the race was Landveyor, who failed to finish with any dash. The conditions for racing were excellent, the weather being gloriously fine and thcourse fast.
