NO CAPITULATION
Goebbels’s Statement
(Received January 31, 7 p.m.)
LONDON, January 30.
“The Fuehrer has instructed uie to say that it is bis most heartfelt wish lo'speak to von, but he regrets that necessity demands his breaking the tradition because exigencies prevent him from leaving the headquarters, where he is conducting great defensive battles.” > This was stated by Dr. Goebbels at the opening of his speech at the Sportspalast.
“This hall,” be said, "never saw an audience either discouraged or hopeless. Only nations which speak of capitulation go under, and that word is not included in our vocabulary. Th.? tenth annivursury of our coming into power is fittingly celebrated at a time of hardship aihl military and political stress. We arc again in the midst of another gigantic winter war of uniininaginable duress, and our troops arc exposed to superhuman trials and perils. Wp are resolved to carry on the war fanatically. We are longing for the hour when the Fuehrer will again give the order to attack with new weapons.
“Measures have already been taken, and more will be taken in the next few days for total war. No dodgers will lie tolerated. Attempts to sabotage the war effort will be crushed with the severest penalties, but the saboteurs are so few that thev are merely a disappearing faction of the nation. All our thoughts are condensed into the prayer, ‘may the Fuehrer, the symbol of our fanatic belief in victory, be preserved healthy and full of strength mid determination.’ We send the slogan to him. ‘Fuehrer, give the order. We shall obey.’ ”
