STILL HOLDING OUT
A Few Germans At Stalingrad (Received January 29, 11.50 p.m.), LONDON, January 28. It is reported from Moscow that the German resistance at Stalingrad is rapidly collapsing, and surrendered troops are pouring in every hour. Probably not more than 5000 or 6000 Germans remain for mopping up. The Germans at Stalingrad mostly resist till their ammunition runs out, apd then surrender. The German news agency says: “Russian artillery and planes are subjecting the Germans at Stalingrad to au almost ceaseless box barrage. Artillery fires on any German who dares show himself by day, and the shells come down without respite. Soviet tanks roar among the ruins of Stalingrad, followed by snipers and infantry. Our men can hardly move their limbs.” Renter’s Moscow correspondent says the Germans attempted to send supplies by air to the troops still holding out in Stalingrad, but not a single plane reached its destination. The crew of one transport plane, when shot down, said that they had been switched from Sicily to the Russian front.
