AIR SCOUTING OVER WAKE ISLAND

WASHINGTON, January 27.

A Navy Department communique states “United States aircraft were attacked on January 25 by eight Japanese Zeros during a reconnaissance over Wake Island. Two Zeros are believed to have been destroyed, and all the United States planes returned at dusk. “On January 26 a formation of Flying Fortress heavy bombers heavily bonwed the Japanese airfield on Ballale Island and started fires in the revetments. Weak anti-aircraft fire was encountered.”
