(Received January 28, 10.30 p.m.) CHUNGKING. January 27. The Japanese attempted to use poison gas against the Chinese in southern Shansi Province, but the wind changed, gassing their own ranks and killing hundreds of men, states a Chinese communique. Japanese bombers attacked the Chinese positions, but most of the bombs hit the Japanese lines. A Japanese offensive in northern Hupeh was repulsed with 1300 casualties.
