At a recent meeting of the Wellington Furniture and Furnishing Trade Industrial Union id’ Employers. Hie statement recently made in Hie Press Hint tlie Minister of Dei’ence had under consideration Hie employment of Japanese prisoners ot war in Hie manufacture of furniture, was considered, and the following resolution was carried unaniniotisly : —• "Tlie members ol' the Wellington Fm-ni-ture and Furnishing Trade Industrial Union ol' Employers are gravely concerned over Hie suggestion made by the Hon. F. Jones. .Minister of Del'enee. Hint Hie Government lias under consideration the employment of Japanese prisoners ol war in furiiitiire manufacturing, and emphntieally protest against the proposaj to utilize Japanese in the manufacture ot furniture in competition witli New Zealanders nt present engaged in the trade. It is further suggested thal from :i .sentimental sti'.nilnoint it. would be iinluir lo expect New Zealnndei-s who have i-etui'iied trom the horrors of war to aeeepl. into llieir homes articles manufactured by Japanese prisoners.” It was also suggested that Japanese prisoners of war should not be employed at skilled trades, lint could be employed on flax-cutting and in many other unskilled oei-n(intions.
