DOURO CUP WINNER

Prince Shad Will Need A Spell

(By

The Watcher.)

Prince Shad, after winning at Dunedin, needed constant attention Io a split hoot before a decision could be reached regarding ills trip to Wellington. Sulllelent improvement took place, and he came up to run successfully in the Douro Cup. As a result of the strain of that race the trouble has recurred, this time more seriously. and owner-trainer F. C. Christie, who took him home last night, says that, it will be at least six months before be is again able to race.

Not Good Enough. One of the main disappointments of the Wellington meeting was Lou Rosa. In the Wellington Cup he was much further up in the running than usual, and it was considered that this might have tended toward his failure to run on at the finish, so on the second day Broughton allowed him to drop out of it early, and then rode him solidly over the last half. It made no difference. He just wasn’t up to the job, and no horse paraded looked more fitted for it.

JLeaders To Date. Leading jockey. W. J. Broughton was being seriously challenged for supremacy by W. F. Ellis, when be failed to ride a winner on the first day at Wellington, but his three successes on Rink, Glenfalloch and Screen put him that many ahead again at the end of the meeting. He has ridden 27 winners to 24 by Ellis, and they are the only riders in the -b’s. The apprentices N. Holland and I. Galvin are next with 10 and 12, and Darcy Redstone and W. Hooton also have 12. It is rather remarkable that Holland, Galvin and Redstone should nil be out of action simultaneously through accidents. h. Smith, Takanini, leads the trainers with 13 inners, and 11. Dulieu is next with 11, the only others with double figures being li. W ’ Ellis and A. E. Didliam each with 10 winners. Though the two head defeats ot Royal Lancer at Wellington meant a difference of £2OOO to owner W. S. Swale, he leads the winning owners tor the season so far with £4160. E. N. Fitzgerald with Kindergarten is next with £4o9t. and J. A. Brown with The Joker and Lord Nullleld £4050.

Not Up To Promise. Early in the season the two-year-old Skyhawk, who won al Napier, was hailed as above the average, but his lorni since has been moderate, and he failed again at Wellington. However, he showed speed on the training tracks, and ns he appears to be growing fast, he may eventually come up to expectations. - ,

Consistent. . . Nightglass has been a very consistent performer in the liighweiglit class on her North Island trip, but she has not quite managed to win. Her turn should come before long.

Fully Fledged. , . . TT ~ In .the report of , the appeal by. H. I. Stewart, published in yesterday's •Dominion," Stewart was referred to as an apprentice jockey. He finished his apprenticeship a lew months ago.

Not Quite Good Enoogh. After running good races in hack company Lowry Bay did not prove equal to the open class in the January mile ou Saturday, but. he finished seventh, so he beat eight home.
