Sterling £878,092 Higher A decrease of £250,094 in the value of bank notes in circulation, an increase ot £2,736,075 in liabilities to banks, a further increase of £878,092 in sterling exchange, and a comparatively small increase of £438,727 in advances to the Maiketing Department are shown in the Reserve Bank return for the week ended January 18, compared with the previous return. The proportion of reserve to notes and other demand liabilities was 46.074. compared with 45.669 the previous week. Net overseas assets were £2 1 ,4-6,103, an increase of £875,831 in the week, approximately the amount by which sterling exchange increased. The principal returns at January 19, 1912, were: Bank notes, £23,893,407; demand liabilities to State, £10,297,030, and to the banks, £14,131,021: gold, £-.801,8<i, sterling exchange, £13,177.906; advances to Marketing Department, £7,102.23.1, and to the State for other purposes, £ 22,<>00,000.
