New Zealand Entrants To
Duntroon
FIRST MAORI SELECTED After undergoing a course at Army School of Instruction, Trentham, 10 young men have now been selected as the 1943 entrants from New Zealand to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia. In announcing their names last evening, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, said that applications were received from all parts of New Zealand and in 'the first instance were the subject of selection by the District Commandants of the three military districts. Those who came up'to the required educational and medical standard were then subject to a final review by a special selection board. The names of the chosen candidates, whom Mr. Jones wished success in their chosen careers, are as follows: Harris,’.Richard Stanley, Nelson: Educated afe--Nelson College, where he took a prominent part in school life. He Mas head prefect of the college a member of the first Rugby NV, and heavyweight boxing champion for the past two yeais. He was'iilso prominent in other athletic activities, and was regimental sergeantmajor ill' the College Cadet unit. He passed the university entrance examination. in 1942. Hellyer, lan James, Havelock North. Attended Napier Boys’ High School, where he was a school prefect and regimental sergeant-major in the cadets. His athletic interests include Rugby and tennis. He was a keen member of the Home Guard, .in which he attained N.C.O. rank, and acted as instructor. He passed the university entrance examination in 1941, and obtained a higher leaving certificate in 1942. Joplin, Peter William Frank, Wellington : Received his education at Wellington College, where his athletic interests lay in Rugby and cricket. He is the holder of the bronze medallion with two bars in life-saving. He held the rank of sergeant in the College Cadets. , His scholastic record includes a pass in the university entrance examination in 1941, and higher leaving certificate in 1942. Manning, Joseph Stewart, Christchurch: Was a student at St. Bede’s (College, where he was head prefect and regimental sergeant-major in the College Cadets. He was prominent in athletic activities, being a member of the first Rugby XV, and represented the college at athletics, being the holder of the college record for the 120 yards hurdles. He passed the university entrance examination in 1942. McKeon, Stanley Rcdvers, New Plymouth: Attended New Plymouth Boys’ High School, where he obtained a pass in the university entrance examination in 1941, and a higher leaving certificate in 1942. He was sergeant in the School Cadets, and took an active part in association and Rugby football and athletics, Poananga. Bruce, Tikitiki-o-rangi, Ruat.oria: Educated at Palmerston North Boys’ High School and is the first member of the Maori race to be selected to enter the Royal Military College, Duntroon. At scliool, where he obtained a pass in the university entrance examination in 1941, he had. a distinguished
athletic career, being a member of the first cricket eleven for four years, and of the first Rugby fifteen for three years. In his final year he was captain of both teams as well as holding the positions of school prefect and sergeant in the school cadets. He also represented the school at tennis and was awarded the “Dux Ludoruin” Uup for outstanding ability and leadership in games. He is at present .serving with the R.'N.Z.A.F Porter, Ralph Kenneth Grey, Auckland : Received his education at Auckland Grammar School and passed the university entrance examination in 1942. He was battalion sergeaiifejnajor in the school cadets and took an active part .in Rugby, athletics and .swimming. He holds the bronze medallion in life saving. Simpson, William Alexander, Wellington: Attended AVellington College and obtaiiied a pass in the university entrance examination in 1939 and a higher leaving certificate in 1940. He was a house prefect and a sergeant in the college cadets and is at present serving in the Territorial force. His athletic interests include Rugby, cricket, athletics, boxing and tenuis. Smith, Robertson Harvey, Wanganui: Was a pupil of 'Wanganui Technical College, where he was head prefect and regimental sergeant-major in the college cadets. He was a member of the first cricket eleven and took part in Rugby, athletics and swimming. He passed the university entrance examination in 1940 and obtained his higher leaving certificate in 1941. At present he holds commissioned rank in the Territorial force. Tebutt, Maxwell, Whangnrei: Was a pupil of Whangarei High School and passed the university entrance examination in 1941. and obtained his higher leaving certificate in 1942, He was a school prefect and company sergeant-major in the school cadet un(t. His athletic achievements included membership ol the first Rugby fifteen, the senior boxing championship and riiimer-up lor the swimming cliampi on sh ip.
