STEAM ROLLER OUT OF CONTROL

Driver Fatally Injured

A city corporation. 15-ton steam roller got out of control in York Place about 4.50 p.m. today, and capsized at the intersection of Yofk Place, Stuart and Albert Streets. The only occupant was the driver, who died a few'minutes alter being removed from the overturned vehicle. He was "... Mr. John Smith, middle-aged, living at 8 Islington Street. North East A alley. Traffic at the time was fairly heavy, including cable ears to Kaikorai, and it was providential that no one was injured. Eye-witnesses state that the roller got out of control some distance up York Place', and that, lhe driver appeared to make an effort to turn into Albert feten.'l, which runs uphill, but, that, an axle broke and the vehicle capsized. They speak highly- of the bravery shown by a returned officer, who. at great risk, pulled Mr. Smith from, the roller from-which great, quantities of steam were escaping. Samuel Aylward (21). a nii'dieat student, son of Dr. Aylward, Blackball, received fatal injuries last evening when a motor-cycle lie was riding collided at; Ngahere with a buteber's van. The driver of the van was slightly injured.
