WIN AND PLACE
A Popular Medium
(By The Watcher.) Opponents of win and place betting should study the figures for V eHlntton meeting. Of the total of L318,b81 I> it through in tb e two days no le s s 11 “ n £188,253/10/- went through the place machine, or nearly (10 per cent. 1 the big punter is gone In ?*ew Zealand. 'The general public are the malnstaj ol the turnovers these days and they HKc the place betting, specially the women. Good HorsOH. The first three on the card in the Douro Cup, and also the first three home, are real good horses, and more will be hearu of them. Prince Shad is one of the best stayers sired by Paper Money, but he is no good unless the going is firm. Kaitere Maati and Koyal Merit are two of the best hacks that Auckland has sent down here. Nelther’s chance was improved by the way in which they took each other on at the head of a fast run mile, but that does not depreciate the merit of the win of Prince Shad, who came from a good way back and won going away. A Good Sticker. .Snowman, the winner of the Trial Plate, is by the Lackham horse Alchemic from Snowball, by Lord Quex —Iceball, a daughter of Valkyrian from the imported Bock Flint mare Pebble 11. Snowman sticks well\and should have further successes. livery Chance. Kahuranaki was well fancied for the Trial and nothing had a better chance as he jumped away best of the lot from No. 1, but he weakened in the straight.
Longer Journey. Dominate and Botany should soon win over a longer distance than a mile if their finishing runs in the January Handicap on Saturday are any criterion.
His First Winner. Glenfalloch, the winner of the Camp Handicap, runs on very solidly and is on the improve. He was taken over at .Marton at the New Year by J. McLean, who recently decided to shift from Riceartou to the North Island so he has not had to wait long for his first winner.
A Top Liner. Palora’s form at the Wellington meeting was very good, and a credit to her trainer, J. P. Ryan, an Australian with considerable experience, who has not been very long in New Zealand. Palora would have been very hard to beat again on Saturday had she got away well. This three-year-old filly was purchased by Mr. A. F. M. Symes with a view to the brood mares* paddock later, and in the meantime her racing activities arc a real family affair. She is raced by three women, Mrs. J. R., R., and R. T. Stead, which must be unique. Mrs. J. R. Stead is the widow of Mr. W. G. Stead, whose two sons, Messrs. R. and R. T. Stead married daughters of Mr. Symes and they are the other two in the joint interest. Well Bred.
There was a quiet tip on Saturday for Gold Stand in the Trial, but he drew 21 and was never prominent, in addition to which he was having his first race. Gold Stand is well bred, being by the successful Mr. Standfast from that good mare Golden Hair. Has Done IVell.
Mr. G. .M. Currie has bad a good innings at the last two Wellington meetings. He won a double here in October with Stairway and Rink, and secured another three races last Saturday with Stairway, Rink and Screen. Mr. Currie had a similar experience to last Saturday at Auckland a few years ago, when he won three races on the opening day of the Easter meeting, the President’s Handicap with Minsk, the Great Northern Oaks with Daniaris, and the Champagne Stakes with Episode. Mask also won the Autumn Handicap on the second day.
Beginner’s Luck. Mr. J. A. Brown, breeder and owner of The Joker is a young Mosglel farmer who also operates a threshing plant. Attractive Lady, dam of The Joker, is the first thoroughbred he hae ever owued, and this was the way of it. Attractive Lady, a mare by Tractor from Lady Sentinel, by Kilbroney, from imported Lady Wayward 11, ancestress of many good winners, was raced by Mr. R. F. McLennan, and later by Mr. Dick McDonald, and she was a good winner. After she finished racing she was mated with Winning Hit’s half-brother, Straight Course, and she produced a black colt. foal. After Mr. McDonald’s death, the mare, with the foal at foot, and served by Paper Money, was Hold privately to Mr. Brown. It was 'a wonderful instance of beginner’s luck, as the foal was none other than Lord Nuffield, the best sprinter in the Dominion, and the mare has since produced The Joker, one of our greatest stayers.
