Pilot Saw Propeller Come Off (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) HOKITIKA, January 2b. The inquiry into the loss of a twinenmned passenger plane off Westport ou December 21, opened this morning before Mr. Stilwell, S.M., Squadron Leader Mnkgill, and Squadron Leader Bolt. Flight Lieutenant Baines (pilot ot the lost plane) said that the plane was at about 4000 feet when one propeller came off. He saw it 10 feet ahead. He throttled back and turned to the right to bring tb<* plane back to land. Jle descended through clouds Io 1000 feet, but could not see land, but continued making for Westport. The plane was losing height, but at. 400 feel it. appeared Io be maintaining it, when it struck the water. It nosed immediately. He pulled himself through a jagged hole in the fuselage and was* followed by three passengers. The door of the escape hatch was too far under water lor use. Had lifebelts been available the passengers would have floated long enough to be rescued. He urged the passengers- remove clothing, but Mr. Mcßride was tire only one who took off bis overcoat. The hearing is proceeding.
