Cost Of Living Figures
Sir, —It would be interesting to know whether subsidies have been included in the index figures on the rise in cost ot living in New Zealand, also in the figures of other countries. If they are not, then the figures given are'uot a correct indication of the position.
One fact which I think has been overlooked ill your comments is that when the Labour Government came into power in 1935, the increase in wages and overtime, in social legislation aud the reduction in the hours of work, must have brought, about, between 1935 and ‘1939, a much greater rise in cost of living in New Zealand than in other British countries. Most of the other countries have only introduced such legislation in part or in whole, since the war began. This fact would therefore account for our figures being lower in comparison during wartime. —I am, etc., NOT SATISFIED. Dannevirke, January 23.
