ECLIPSES THIS YEAR
No Big Spectacles For New Zealand Two eclipses of the sun and two of the moon will occur this year, but though three of them may bo visible from New Zealand none will be impressive spectacles for people in New Zealand. One eclipse of the sun, which will be seen nowhore as anything more than an annular eclipse, will bo visible in New Zealand as a partial eclipse, but. it will begin only half an hour before sunset so that it will be <»n'.y a minor sight. Il will happen on Angus! 1. A partial eclipse of tin* m«»‘>n may be seen in north-eastern parts of the North Island on I'ebruary 20. I' not be seen from Wellington because 0 will finish before the moon rises. H will begin al 1.20 p.m. and end at J-Jd P-’n., but the moon will not rise till 7.20 P-in. A partial eclipse of the moon that wo. be visible from Wellington is expecte I earlv in the morning ol August lb. H will begin nt 5.5 S a.m. The midule <»f the eclipse will be at 7.2 S a.m.. when the earth’s shadow will obscure nearly ninetenths of the moon’s disc. Ihe will set onlv 11 minutes before the middle of the eclipse, so that a good view of this eclipse will be obtained if the sky is clear, at least from places wilh a view toward the western horizon.
