Great Evacuation At Marseilles MANY ARRESTS (By Telegraph,—Press Assu.—Copyright.) (Received January 25, 11.55 p.m.) LONDON, January 25. Vichy radio stated that the French and German police have carried out the evacuation of 40,000 inhabitants from the “old port” of Marseilles on military and security grounds. The Ffench police have also purged the town of Marseilles. They took 0000 persons into, custody and closed 1000 cafes and bars. The Prefect of Marseilles said that those taken into custody gravely menaced the security of the city and exposed the population to danger. The evacuees from the old port, will be permanently settled in the Rhone area.
Berlin radio said that the Vichy Government has decreed penalties, including death, for sabotage of public transport.
