It was refreshing to see so many small frocks maini.v"nade from silk crepe jersev sheer and linen materials. Recent meetings seem to have been ades of tweeds, warm coats, uin ’ ,r « lla ® and rainproof garb generally so fat as women’s wear was concerned. Now Zealand Army nurses in sum mt uniform looked particularly '' elb tailored white frocks, with scarlet shoifi tier tabs, white hats and shoes and stoc in"S being generally admired. Lius is nrobabh’ the first time that this uniform has been seen at a United States Navy and Army 11Ur /' . ’ on the other hand, wore respectively then navy and gold ami two-toned b ue uniforms, some complete with to ’’ co t ?‘ b ’ A n ie J vicewomen and servicemen of the Allieu Forces were present in large numbers as gu°eX S o" the facing Club. So ~ a “ d varied were the uniforms that they re minded one of the light for v now bein-’ waged, not only by the wearers of uniforms, but by the thousands o£ civilian workers, many of whom wereprobably present enjoying a day in the ope . Mrs Eric Riddiford, wite of tilt prest .lent wore a cool green ensemble With hat io tone. Mr. and Mrs. Riddiford had invited a partv of returned and wounded men of iU to share their box in the stand, from where they v ere able to follow the races in comfort. Some lovely shades of dusty and rose pink were noticeable in the /‘r’ l . l fr worn. Blue, corn yellow and beige were also popular colours. 'Embossed selfworking, on the sleeves and bodices lent an oramental touch to plain jnMenals. Paisley silks nnd linen-lnnslied frocks, worn with large, simple straw hate maffi several attractive ensembles. Artificial summer flowers ran riot when used to trim or make the small doll-like hats popular thisT’ear. A few umbrellas ’infurled from time Io time ns a protection ■igninst the sun. though they were probably brought in ease of rain. The seats and the grass provided tired natrons with.n plaee to rest: people who brought refreshments with them ten under the trees were einietl by those who had to queue up for afternoon tea at the'booths. This served by the assistants, who worked nt high speeu ?hroughout the day ami did yeoman service in coping with the demand.
