FINES IN AUCKLAND
Uncustomed Cigarettes

The wide diversity of ways in which uncustomed American cigarettes have come into circulation in Auckland was revealed in prosecutions in the Magistrates’ Court today. Mr. V. K. Meredith, Crown Prosecutor, conducting cases against persons found in possession of uncustomed goods, said that American tobacco and cigarettes brought into the country duty free were solely for use by American troops, but it had been found that (iiiantitie.s of these duty-free goods had got into several hands and there bad been trafficking in them. The seriousness of this position was the loss of revenue Io flic Government and unfair competition with legitimate traders.
For having in their possession uncuslomed cigarettes. William Cleary, D. J. Maher and Flora McKenzie were each fined £25. Arthur Grange, for selling uncustomed cigarettes, was also fined £25 on each of two charges. A. J. Andrews. Rotorua, wits fined £35 for having in his possession uncustomed cigarettes.
