PROBLEMS FOR BETTORS AT TRENTHAM TODAY

Large Fields And Fast Going

(By

The Watcher.)

Prospects are bright for a successful conclusion to the summer meeting of the Wellington'Racing Club at Trentham today. Large fields are engaged, the even more open than on the first day, and with the tine weather’during the week the going has firmed and will be very fast. The principal races today will be the Racing Club and Metropolitan handicaps and the Douro Cup.

Nightray, Madame Itachel and Nightglass arc i the formihorses in the Highweight, but 'Pastmaster, galloped better on Thursday and must be. given .a chance to redeem himself. - Stairway and Peters Wife ran creditable races the first day and Gunga Din won twice over a mile at Greymouth at the New Year. Stylosa must also be given a good chance. There are many possibilities in the Trial. On first day’s running Flying Ace and Snowman will be well fancied, while Kahuranaki and Spirit also ran creditably. There are several fresh maidens with good chances. In the open mile Tuatara looks the likeliest of the topweights and Grey Night should be able to improve on his fourth the first day. Dominate ran a fair race, and may be returning to form and Lowry Bay’s hack form is good enough to give him a chance. For the hack sprint the favourite may be Duncroon after the good showing in die shorter distance of the Wellington Stakes when she was finishing on. Sir Bradbury, Flying Hawk, Glenfalloch, Lady Nuffield and Vafebit are all possibilities. With The Joker and Good Scout unlikely starters in the Racing Club Handicap tlie form fancies should include Royal Lancer, Lou Rosa and jvoxola, while Battledress has only got to improve a little. Rakanui should ■be bard to beat fresh. The lightweights will have to improve. In the two-year-old race the form horses from the first day are Master Dash, Gulf Stream and Barras, and the latter may have more luck today. Supercharged and Virtuoso are two newcomers bound to run prominently, and Skyhawk on the tracks during .the week has given indications of returning to form. Betting appears likely to take a wide range in tire Metropolitan Handicap. From the first dav’s running good support is assured Neenah, Beau Vaals, Palora and Poutat.au and Whackie may come to light. Kentucky might stage a surprise here its he looks fit and well, and Duncannon is sure to appreciate the drop in weight. The Douro Cup promises to be a great race in keeping with the past contests, which ;have generally brought to light a hack or two much above the average. Auckland stables hold a strong hand here wit I) Kaitere Maati, Royal Merit and Bright Fox. and the two topweights will lie hard to beat. Prince Shad won at Dunedin though over a longer journey, and Stourbridge, Dash o’ Dublin, Tavern Light and Sal must all be given chances. Betting will be win and place, and the following horses may be supported In their engagements: — Mungaroa Highweight: Pastmaster, Madame Rachel and Stylosa. Trial Plate: Flying Ace, Hippodrome and Snowman. January Handicap: Grey Night, Tuatara nnd Dominate. , . Camp Handicap: Duncroon, Lady Nuffield nnd Glenfalloch.
