SOLDIER ASSAULTS MARINE

Remarking that conduct of the kind witli which accused was charged might lead to serious trouble between the forces in Now Zealand, Mr. Colliding, S.M., sent to prison for one month Patrick O'Shea, miner and soldier, aged -.11, for assaulting a member of the United States Marine Corps, with which be was charged in the Magistrates’ Court, 'Wellington, yesterday. O’Shea told the magistrate his home was Dublin.

Evidence was given by two marines Hint they met accused iu a hotel bar, and accused took them to a brewery to buy bottled beer. At the brewery they had drinks. Later in Cuba Street there was a quarrel over the division of the dozen bottles and, it was alleged, accused hit one of the marines over the head with a bottle. Four stitches were put in the marine's scalp. Two civilian witnesses of the fight gave evidence. Accused denied using a bottle .and alleged lie was struck first. He admitted convictions for assault and resisting the police. The magistrate said he did not believe O'Shea was struck first. He had a bad list for that sort of thing. He got liquor into himself and then assaulted the police aud other people.
