Sea Spi To Spell SONCY SENT HOME (By The Watcher.) Koi Ragi's chance in the Wellington Slakes was not improved by drawlug .15 at the post, but it was not sufficient handicap to excuse his failure to reach the money. A Long Spell.
The two-year-old filly Sea Spi will now be spelled, and she is mnlikely to race again till next season. In seven starts she has never been further -back than second and has won three times. At Auckland she was suffering from an abscess ou the Jaw, which made her hang badly in the Foal Stakes, otherwise her connexions consider she would have beaten Olga's Pal that day. Not So Good. The fact that two hacks like Theolateral aud Duncroon could 1111 the minor places in the Wellington Stakes docs not flatter those who finished 'behind them, but Subadar is much better than his form in this event appears on paper. He got squeezed baek early in the race, and had no chance afterward to make up the lost ground In a race run In 59 for the five furlongs, but he was finishing ou better than anything bar the winner. Returned Home.
Soucy returned to Riccarton on Monday. The two-year-old Beau Dink was also sent down. J-Ie was brought from Takaninl by F. Smith, and handed over to G. Ridgway, who will train him for future events. A Late Scratching.
There have been inquiries regarding whether Virtuoso was a scratching in the Fltzherbert Handicap or not. P. Atkins was weighed out for Virtuoso, and had the colours up, but trainer J. 11. Jefferd was unable to get a suitable rider for the other two-year-old, Barrosa, whepu he trains for Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds, so lie saeriliced his entry in the interests of his clients, Virtuoso being a late scratching, and any money invested ou him was refunded. A Bad Bun.
The three-year-old Stourbridge got badly away in the Apprentices’ Plate, and then met with further trouble through the fall of Sea Quex, so that he was never a posslibility. His form in this race should not lie taken as correct. Consistent.
Good Scout is putting up a consistent record of second plaeincs, having been in that place behind Tmere at Riccarton, twice behind Yogi at Alanawatu and again ou Saturday, in his last four starts. He was definitely a very unlucky runner in the Apprentices’ Plate ou Saturday.
Good Efforts. Kahuranaki's fourth in the Ruapehu Handicap was not a bad effort, as he was drawn 24 at the barrier and hud to bo used early to get a position. The favourite. Bright Fox, was also drawn wide, and was a long way (back at the half-mile, lie finished seventh, so he must have come home pretty well. Battledrcss. Battledress was never a possibility in the Wellington Cup, but ho ran an improved race to finish fifth. Jt was almost a repetition of his good race in the New Zealand Cup, on which lie failed to improve in toe .Metropolitan Handicap. It will be interesting to sec if lie can produce something better next Saturday. He is getting down to weights which would (jive him first-class prospects if he struck form. A Transformation.
Few who watched the wheels turning out records on the totalizator at Trentbain on Saturday could credit that it is only just a little over 10 years ago that the turnover on one day of the winter meeting there was as low as £16,068. Nowadays it is only an average total for a single race. Sold, Warfarer lias been sold by Mr. G. Mnr-ray-Aynsley to a patron of .1. L. Muir's stable at Te Rapa. Warfarer has only had two races, but lie has been showing promise on the track. He is a three-year-old brown gelding by Nightinarch from Muff, dam als_p of Rebellion and Muffler. Muff is by Arrowsmith, and is from Contempt, dam of Silver Scorn and Disdain, brilliant fillies which disappointed later in their careers. Last August Muir bought Irate and Stylosa from Mr. Murray-Aynsley, Irate winning the Stratford Cup recently, while Stylosa just failed in a hack race at the same meeting. Egmont Nominations.
