FLYING FORTRESSES ATTACK LILLE
(British Official Wireless.) (Received November 9, 7.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 8. Au official communique states that United States Flying Fortresses, escorted by Allied lighters, bombed two targets in occupied France during daylight today. One, formation attacked tlm Lille steel and locomotive works, while another bombed enemy airfields at Abbeville. Good results were observed at Lille, where hits were seen on the works and adjacent marshalling va rds. At Abbeville heavy cloud mti.de the observation of results difficult. Strong fighter opposition was encountered and fighting continued till the bombers .were re-crossing the Channel. A number of enemy fighters were destroyed, and six of our escorting fighters and one fortress are missing. More than 300 fighters participated in today’s raids over France. A New York message quoted the Berlin radio as saying that British aircraft have twice raided Vichy. Antiaircraft batteries replied.
