SPANISH EXERCISES AT TANGIER

LONDON, November 8. Berlin radio reported that the British authorities had closed the frontier to Spain. It is pointed out in London that Spain intended to hold manoeuvres in the Tangier zone in the presence of Italian and German attaches, including an exercise “against a supposed enemy landing,” ou November 13. Spain is estimated to have 10 divisions in Morocco. France under the armistice was allowed three. The British Ambassador to Spain, Sir Samuel Hoarc, was instructed to give the Spanish Government a solemn assurance that the operations in no way threaten Spanish territory, whether metropolitan or overseas. “Spanish territory will be fully respected and Spanish interests in North Africa will not be compromised,” it was stated. The Portuguese Government has been assured that it is the firm intention of the British Government that Portuguese territories should not be involved in hostilities.
