CHUNGKING, November 5
The Japanese, according to a Chinese army spokesman, are massing troops in the live Chinese provinces of Hupeh, Honan, Shansi. Sttiyan and Shantung. Fifty thousand troops are conc-m--trated'in Hankow and upward of It)ODO in the Tai Mountains in Shantung.
The spokesman said that it was d.'ihcull to predict the enemy’s objectives, but it was possible that the Japanese hoped Io close Hie gap in the Pekit.gHankow railway, GO per cent, of which is now in Japanese hands. The Jnpißiese might also try to consolidate their positions, particularly in North China.
It is noted that most of the recent Japanese drives apparently were launched for the purpose of removing potential bases for a Chinese counterattack.
