SOLDIER DECORATED
Award Of British Empire Medal Advice of the award of Hie British Empire Medal (Military Division) to Lance-Corporal R. M. Bicknell, N.Z. Engineers, has been received from the War Office, London. The citation reads: — “This n.c.o. voluntarily entered the repacking area of an ammunition depot during a fire on July 25, 1942, and performed outstanding work without regard to his personal, safety. Considerably shaken by blast and throve n to the ground on many occasions, he displayed great bravery throughout and. was an inspiring example to all who were with him. He searched the area for possible casualties while explosions were constantly occurring and splinters and debris flying in all directions.”
Corporal Bicknell’s next-of-kin is Mrs. M. G. Bicknell (wife), Villa Bafhatjy, Helwan, Egypt, He sailed from New Zealand with the First Echelon. He was a builder in civil life and lived at Te Awamutu.
