ROSE DAY APPEAL
Recoxd Sum Collected
The Wellington Returned Services’ Association's Rose Day collection yesterday broke aJ ‘previous records, the total when counting ceased last ntght being £3900. There are still sums to come iu from outlying areas, and subscriptions from a number of firms promised but not yet received will also swell the final total. The conynittee is extremely gratified with the result and expresses its gratitude both to the public for its generosity and to the workers who contributed to the great success. The previous best collection was last year’s £3lOO. Women volunteer workers, actively engaged since June last, made 95,000 roses, and yesterday 1000 helpers set out to sell them in Wellington city and suburbs, Lower Hutt and Petone. The allocation to Petone was sold out by 10 a.m., and an urgent call was made for more roses. Posted at strategic points of the city, the army of willing helpers made the campaign an all-out one, and met with ready co-operation on the part of purchasers. House-to-house canvassing was also undertaken. Organizations which took part in the rose-selling were the Wadestown Red Cross, the A.N.A. Club. English Speaking Union, Air Force Relations, Y W CA, R.S.A. Rose Workers, U.S.A, women’s section, 'St. John Ambulance and Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul Society, National Club, Wqmeu’s National- Reserve, Public Service, and South African Veterans’ Association. Bank tellers', as has been customary. gave their services voluntarily last night to the work, which occupied some liouiv? of counting Hie proceeds.
