HEAVY BATTLE IN STALINGRAD
Russians Again Advance (British Official Wireless.) (Received November 4, 8 p.m.) RUGBY, November 4. Last night’s Soviet communique says: “The enemy brought up large reserves at Stalingrad and threw into the battle two infantry divisions, 40 tauks and large number of planes. The fighting was particularly fierce, often hand-to-hand. In some sectors four or five attacks were launched, but all were repelled with heavy losses to the enemy. In one factory area our troops dislodged the enemy from several points. At least 2000 Hitlerites were killed, and the enemy losses in material were also heavy. "Our infantry north-west of Stalingrad dislodged the enemy from several fortified positions after artillery preparation. “In heavy defensive fighting southeast of Nalchik we destroyed 14 German tanks. In the Tuapse sector three infantry companies were annihilated and prisoners taken. Another infantry battalion is surrounded, and our troops are waging a fierce struggle to annihilate it.” A correspondent says that the landing of a Russian rifle division across the Volga at a point north of Stalingrad saved a tense situation in the factory area the Germans having to divert forces to engage this force. ,
