24-30 Years Age Group ANALYSIS OF PRESENT OCCUPATIONS

Registrations for essential work of women of the 24-30 age group in the hands of the National Service Department now total 34,644, .but it is estimated that 41,000 were eligible. Employers are obliged to check up on their staffs to ensure that all those liable have registered. Women with children, members of the forces, and a number of other specially exempted classes, are not called on to register. The registrations now held are by 20,898 single women and 13,746 married women wUJiout children. The total includes 2656 single and 1919 married women iu the Wellington metropolitan area. An examination of the <iccupational groups in the '24-30 age registration is interesting. Living at home .anck not employed otherwise are 2876 single women and 6940 married women without children. Engaged in professional occupations are 2205 single and 450 married women, including 1193 teachers and 1178 dental nurses. There are 4910 single and 1884 married office workers, including 1771 typists, and 231 telephone and exchange operators. Workers in the secondary industrial group are 3587 single and 1704 married women, including 2947 textile and clothing operatives, 662 in the food and drink trades, 290 footwear workers and 193 in the printing, publishing and stationery trades. Transport occupations account of 118 single and 69 married women, including 44 on railways, 53 on tramways, and 81 motor drivers. Shop workers are a large group, consisting of 2398 single and 1183 married women, including 2993 shop assistants and 413 hairdressers. Hotel, domestic and catering workers number 2768 single and 736 married women, including 1930 in private domestic employment. Other groups account for 2036 single and 780 married women, including 1965 farm workers, of whom 1420 are single.
