N.Z. TROTTING CUP
Summary Of Form For Saturday’s Race
(By
Overcheck.)
Of the sixteen horses originally nominated for tlie New Zealand Trotting Cup twelve have survived the final payment. It is a very even field, and an excellent contest should be the result. A brief review of the form of those engaged is given below:— Bronze Eagle is a horse of great promise, but whether he is quite up to the best form has yet to be established. He is reported to have been in a bad way recently and his trainer may not be able to bring him to his top form by Saturday next. His best time at two mile-;, is 4.18 2-5 from a 4.30 mark. Clockwork is a horse of much promise, but he may dud present dompan.v a little bit too tough. He has a record of 4.18 2-5, registered at Ashburton in the season before last. Tlie latest winning performance fl’tis registered at Auckland in Deccm. ber, when he recorded 4.31 2-5 from g 4.31 mark.
Gold Bar is a speed merchant, but his stamina is still open to question. There Is no Springfield Globe to go fl’ith him lu the Cup, and tills may help him, but I am inclined to the view that the last couple of furlongs will prove his undoing. Haughty Is a solid mare and promises to be one of the hardest to beat ,in the Cup, provided she goes away with the field. At times she has made- things difficult for herself by dwelling on the mark. She won four races last season and was placed in - seven others. This season she ran third to Coquette and Chatmos in the National Handicap, when conceding tlie pair 48 yards. Haughty then started from 4.27.
Peter Smith ran third in last year's Cup, since when he has not been placed. Before running in the Cup last season Peter Smith won at a mile and a quarter at Oamaru, recording 2.42 4-3. He contested the President's Handicap at New Brighton in October, the race being won by Hardy Oak in 4.2i> 4-5. I question whether he is' as good this year as he was at this time last season. Bayard is ou e of the three Cup horses that have been placed this season, but he is «o small that He does not impress as a Cup horse. Oast season .he failed to run into a place. -At the recent meeting at Oamaru Bayard ran second to Mankind In the Hannon Memorial Handicap, of 14 miles.- Five other Cup horses were in the field, and of these Loyal Key did best to finish fourth. Colonel Grattan is probably on the down grade. Last season he ran a third over a mile at Addington, registering 2.5 2-5. In the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru be was prominent for a mile, hut failed to run on. It therefore seems unlikely that he will have made such progress in the meantime to enable him to see out a strongly-run two miles. Ferry Post contested five races last season, winning two at Addington In August, JIMI. Both were over two miles. He has raced twice unsuccessfully this season. He has been a difficult horse to bring to his best* form. Fine Art contested three races last year, winning over 10 furlongs the first time out, registering 2.44. He has raced twice this season. It is doubtful whether he will lio equal to anything better than he has done in the past. Great Jewel raced twice unsuccessfully last year and failed to run into the money in the one race lie has contested this year. He suffered some Interference, so his form in that race may prove unreliable. Loyal Bey won three races last season, one each at two miles, 13 furlongs, and a mile and a half. He clocked 4.1 S 2-5 at two miles, and 3.16 4-5 at a mile and a half. Hr has had two races this season, securing a fourth at Oamaru, He is a possible improver. Josedale Grattan won the Cup last year and promises to be difficult to De'at thin time. He has a record of 4.15 at two miles and 2.39 at 10 furlongs. He had two outings at Auckland recently, but be had ,r > concede such impossible starts that his failure to run into a place was not surprising. These outings should prove very helpful to him when he steps out in the Cup at Addington. METROPOLITAN fields (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 3. Avoiding Largo Fields. The latest decision in Victoria to help to avoid unwieldy fields is to prohibit an owner accepting with two horses in one race, or to accept with the same horse in two different race*. The latter idea was carried into effect last month by the Wellington Racing Club. The Victorian rule did not apply absolutely except in minor races. In big even Is If an owner accepts with two liorees and it becomes accessary | to reduce t.he Hold, the committee may decide to eliminate one of the pair. ■
