Found 'by a railway surfaceman iu the Tawa Flat tunnel about 8.30 yesterday morning, the 'badly mutilated body of a man was identified last night as that of

WILLIAM PATRICK CASEY, aged 53, a leading aircraftman stationed at an aerodrome in the Manawatu district. The surfaceman was on a routine patrol of tlie permanent way, and cajne on the body lying against the northbound track about three-quarters of the way through the tunnel from Wellington. There were very severe head injuries, and one of the legs was almost amputated. Death had been instantaneous.

According to information iu the possession of the police, L/Ac. Casey left Palmerston North for Wellington last Thursday on five flays’ leave, with the intention of visiting a friend, but there has not been sufficient time to trace his movements in Wellington. It is presumed that L/Ac. Casey, whose wife lives at 106 Toanui Street, Palmerston North, fell from, a train which left Wellington on Sunday night. He. was due back at his aerodrome for duty at 3 p.m. yesterday. L/Ac. Casey was. a returned soldier of the last war, and before that bad served five years in the lloyal Navy. In. addition to his wife, he leaves a married daughter.
