BURGLARS ACTIVE

Houses Ransacked At Kilbirnie £6OO IN ONE HAUL

Burglars operating in Kilbirnie have entered at least five houses in the past fortnight and at least four other cases are believed to be under police' investigation. In most eases the thieves appeared to have operated at leisure and to have had time to ransack thoroughly drawers, .dressing-tables, and wardrobes. In one house they made a haul of £6OO, but the other losses vary from £8 to £35.

A large sum of money was included in the haul made at 93 Coutts, Street at the home of Mr. C. Hyman, on the night of Labour Day. On the same night two houses were entered in Ross Street and two watches and a cigarette-case taken from No. 30, occupied by Mrs. A. R. Prestney, were found in the house in Coutts Street. The home of Mrs. F. A. E. Hendrickson at 26 Ross Street was entered the same night and thoroughly, ransacked, the contents of drawers and cupboards being scattered over the floor, but nothing is believed to be missing. Notes and cash to the value of £35, the takings from a small business during the previous week, were stolen during Labour weekend when thieves entered the home of Mr. J. Sweet, 45 Bridge Street, Rongotai. No trace could be discovered of the manner in which they gained entry to the premises, but it is thought that they must have availed themselves. of au open window. Entry through a window at the rear of the house was gained at 25 Henry Street, where similar chaos was caused by a search for valuables. Such articles as cigarette-cases and electric torches and £8 in cash, belonging to Mr. D. A. Tucker, were stolen. > Other burglaries have been reported from Seatoun Road, Duncan Terrace and Rodrigo Road, Kilbirnie, and Plunket Street, Kelburn.
