SCHOOL EMERGENCY
Achievement Noted Abroad Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., November 1. The Minister of Education, Air. Alason. said ‘in Palmerston North on Friday that the work done here iu the emergency period at the beginning of this year iu connexion with education had formed a demonstration for the rest of New Zealand. It had been noted far- and wide beyond the Dominion and even on -the other-side of the world. He had admiration for the people concerned and for the spirit they had shown. Great problems which involved New Zealand's capacity for building following the entry of Japan into the war were referred to by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, when simaking in Palmerston North on Friday. He said it had been felt that New Zealand was doing well iu the -building of -camps before Japan entered the war, but when that eventuated a colossal programme had been brought down. When he looked at the whole scheme the problem of getting tlie thousand and otic types of buildings required seemed almost insuperable. Even with the remarkable efforts which had been made, all camps had not been put up to tlie standard desired. Great strain had been placed on some men. By and large, however, the young men of the country had shown a splendid spirit in making the best of the conditions into which they had unfortunately been plunged. Extra'ordinary powers hud been given to the Building Controller so that he could meet the big problems with the depleted manpower.
