SHIP DAMAGED BY FIRE IN AUSTRALIA

SYDNEY, October 30. A steamer of more than 5000 toils }vas damaged at an Australian port last night when lire broke out among the cargo ot petrol and other dangerously inflammable goods. AVliile 1-0 firemen attempted to subdue the blaze. 40 wharf labourers risked their lives to move the cargo, which, it was feared, might cause a disastrous explosion. Police believe the lire was started by sparks from an oxy-acetylene flame cutter which was used to remove steel cl.-ats on the dock. Gasmasks wore used hy the firemen, who had to work amtd tee d»‘HKC smoke and fumes created when a largo consignment of cork took tire. After many hours tlie blaze was g r t under control.
