MODERATE SCORING
Wellington Cricket Gets Under Way CENTURY TO H. F. RICE Though conditions for run-getting were ideal when a start, was made with the Wellington Cricket Association’s senior competition on Saturday, it was not surprising that batsmen, considering the few opportunities they have had to practise, have not yet obtained a sight of the ball. Bowlers seized the chance to start off with good figures, many totals not reaching three figures. A notable exception was H. F. Rice, captain of the Kilbirnie team, who carried his bat through the first innings against the Army eleven for a spirited total of 104, thus having the honour of scoring the first century of the season. Kilbirnie totalled 173, and dismissed Army for 137. The Air Force batsmen collapsed badly against Wellington College Old. Boys, falling for totals of 59 and 52, to be beaten by an innings and 34 runs. The airmen, were all at sea to the slow bowling of‘A. W. Duncan, G. L. Whyte, aud J. Reynolds. L. V. Browne scored a vigorous 58 in Old Boys’, total of 145. School of Artillery, making a first appearance in the competition, found the modest total of 151 put up by MidlandWellington too big a hurdle. Davison and Stewart shaped so brightly that 73 runs jvere on for the loss of only four wickets, but Menzies and Fortune then bowled so well that the remaining batsmen were dismissed for 16 runs, and the innings closed for 89. An exciting finish at Kelburn Park saw University just fail to reach the Institute Old Boys’ total of 210 by three runs with two wickets in hand. Ormiston and Rogers reached the halfcentury for Institute, the pair putting on 104 for the fourth wicket. P. I). Wilson and Stringer put on 96 for University first wicket in 45 minutes, and Beard played a resolute knock later, but unenterprising batting by the later batsmen robbed' University of a win, the game resulting in a draw. Bright innings by Mustard and Bennett, both of whom passed the half-cen-tury enabled Hutt to beat Petone by 117 runs on the first innings, with one wicket in hand. Willis, who scored 40, was the only Petone batsman to make a stand. „ , . A bright innings for 49 by J. A. Onglev enabled St. Patrick’s College Old Boys to score 118 against Karon, and this modest total was good enough to give St. Patrick’s a win by 57 runs, good bowling by Jupp, Metcalf, and Guthrie dismissing Karori for 61 runs.
