Women Serving In Armed Forces EXTRA SIXPENCE A DAY Personnel In Lower Ranks Higher rates of pay for the noncommissioned ranks in the Women’s Auxiliary Services of the Navy, Army and Air Force are provided for in new regulations governing pay and conditions which have been approved by War Cabinet. lhe daily rate of pay for qualified and unqualified personnel has been increased by sixpence, and in future no deduction is to be made from pay where quarters and rations are provided. Hitherto 1/1 a day or 7/6 a week was deducted from women living in barracks, so that the new rates represent in these cases an increase of 1/7 a day or 11/- a week. The ’subsistence allowance, which is payable if quaiters and rations are not provided, is also to be increased from 2/6 to 3/- a day. The annual salary of the chief officer of the W.R.N.S. is fixed at £320, and that of the chief commander of the W.A.A.C. and the wing officer of the W.A.A.F. at £350 each. A first officer in the W.R.N.S. is to receive an annual salary of £275, and the corresponding ranks in the other two services, that of senior commander and squadron officer, are to be paid £290 each. These are consolidated rates of pay and no allowances will be pay-' able to these officers except travelling allowances on duty.
The daily rates of pay for the corresponding ranks, in the W.R.N.S., W.A.A.C. and W.A.A.F. respectively are as follows Second officer, junior commander, flight officer, 10/0; third officer, subaltern, section officer, 9/0; fourth officer, second subaltern, assistant section officer, 8/0; chief petty officer, senior leader, under officer, 8/- qualified, 7/0 unqualified. The following scale, for the remaining ranks represents an increase of sixpence a day in each case, both for qualified and unqualified personnel:— Chief petty officer (second class), staff "sergeant, senior sergeant, 7/0 qualified, 7/- unqualified; petty officer Wren, sergeant, sergeant, 7/-, 0/0; leading Wren, corporal, corporal, 0/0, 6/-; Wren, lance corporal, W.A.L., 0/-, 5/0; probationary Wren, private, W.A.I, 5/6, 5/-.
If quarters are not provided but one or more meals a day are provided during duty, 1/- a meal, is to be deducted whether or not the meals are actually taken. A deduction of 3/- a day is to be made from the pay of officers holding salaried appointments when they are provided with rations and quarters. Uniforms are free, but no underclothing is provided. Uniforms and other articles on issue are to be replaced after fair wear and tear by the Navy, Army and Air Departments. A mufti allowance of £7/10/- will be paid to all ranks on discharge or on being placed on indefinite leave without pay, provided they have served continuously on full time paid service for not'less than twelve months.
Leave may lie granted up to 18 days a year, exclusive of Sundays or statutory holidays. Leave is to be considered a privilege and not an entitlement, and is to be granted subject to the. exigencies of the service. The daily subsistence allowance of 3/will be paid to personnel when absent from their place ot duty during annual leave. No subsistence allowance will be paid to personnel when absent on weekend leave or leave of less than 48 hours.
Free travelling warrants by rail and/or steamer,.and also by road service where no other means of transport are available, may be issued to personnel for the purpose of proceeding on leave from their place of duty to home. Not more than three free warrants are to be issued to any one member per annum.
