U.S. ELECTIONS FOR CONGRESS
Former Isolationists Still In Arena WAR IN BACKGROUND (Received November 1, 8.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 31. This Tuesday [tomorrow] the United States engages in the biennial Congressional elections. At one -time it was thought that America’s entrance into the war would markedly affect those candidates who were strongly Isolationist before the war, but the results of the primaries have rather shattered such notions. The truth is that till late last year the preponderant feeling in America was a desire to keep out of actual hostilities, and consequently there is no strong wisli to punish those Congressmen who strove to keep America aloof from foreign affairs. Though the war has entered on a period of active suspense, with eyes turned anxiously toward the Solomons, the electors voting on Tuesday will not be over-influenced by the grim realities of the war. . . , . Republican gains are indicated in various ways, particularly because there is a normal swingback in what is called an off-year election, as the presidential election comes two years later.
