BRITISH PROGRESS IN MADAGASCAR
Vichy Stand Believed Over
LONDON, October 30. Tn Madagascar, British forces have entered Fianarantsoa, the- most important town'in the south of the island which was till recently the headquarters of the Vichy Governor-General. This is announced in a communique from the G.O.C. in'East Africa. The communique says that the occupation of the town by East African troops was preceded by a short action 1G miles to the north, in which the British forces suffered very slight casualties and took 140 prisoners, including two colonels. 'Die Governor-General and tlie commander of the Vichy troops have withdrawn further south. The communique also says it is lielieved that the Vichy forces are no longer able to put up an effective resistance, though the policy of road demolition is likely to continue.
