FRESH WATER FROM UNDER SEA
Supply In Wellington Harbour From a four-inch bore penetrating 67 feet below sea bottom, with the depth of water at the site of the bore 68 feet, it is estimated that 80,(XX) to 100,006 gallons of fresh water will be made available daily to Somes Island. The water was located 350 to 400 feet east of the island wharf and to carry the water to the island a diver laid 370 feet of four-inch main along the harbour bottom. The work has been done by the Wellington Harbour Board, under the direction of Mr. K. T. Jenssen, acting-chief engineer. Previously the board carried water to the island by tugs.
The water supply is believed to come from an underground river, probably a continuation of the Hutt River, subterranean to the harbour bottom. This is the same source as that from Gear. Island and known right up the Hutt Valley. When the harbour board was driving piles at Point Howard wharf it struck a flow of water and put down a bore, which is still running though no use iA made of the supply.
