POWER SUPPLY
Waikaremoana Plant Extension FIRST UNIT READY Within <a week or two the newly installed 21,000 kw. unit at Plripaua for the extension of the Waikaremoana hydro-electric power scheme should be functioning, it is stated. Trouble with the bearings has led to delay in bringing it into operation. Material for the second 21,000 kw. unit to be put in as part of the extension has not all arrived yet, but the last is being shipped. The operation of these two units will nearly double the present capacity of the Waikaremoana plant. They will bring in an additional 42,000 kw. when sufficient water is available to run them to maximum capacity. When there is a low level flow there is only sufficient water for 30,000 kw. The installation at Highbank, in the South Island, where it is intended to use the water from the Rangitata irrigation scheme and put it back into the Rakaia, is nearing completion. It will provide for a single unit of 25,000 kw. It had been hoped to have the station running this year, but part of the plant was lost at sea, and has to be manufactured again.
